P2: Understand the methods and principles of sound design and production
Exercise 1
Sound formats
The reason people would use an Uncompressed file format is to get more quality but it takes up a lot of space so it isn't ideal for portable music players like phones or MP3 players.
The reason people would use a Lossy Compression file format is to get the files on less powerful music players like phones or MP3 players but they have less quality.
Audio sampling
Resolution can constrain a file size by using more pixels to have higher quality which would increase the file size. Bit depth can constrain a file size by using more bits of information which would increase the file size.
Sample Rate means the number of samples of audio per second. Mono means that there is only one speaker. Stereo means that there are two speakers. Surround means there are multiple speakers around the listener.
Exercise 2
DSP (Digital Signal Processor) can limit the recording of sound by compressing or filtering the sound. RAM (Random Access Memory) can limit the recording of sound by storing information in a lossy file format. File format (e.g. MP3, WAV AIFF) can limit the recording of sound by using a lossy file format which loses quality. Audio output (e.g. Mono, Stereo, Surround) can limit the recording of sound because if you use Mono output you can only hear from one speaker and you don't hear the sound around you. PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) can limit the recording of sound by compacting information into discs which compresses information.
Recording Scenario
Multi-track recording is used to keep tracks in sync. Midi (Multi Instrument Digital Interface) is used to make several different music instruments and for recording them. DAT (Digital Audio Tape) is used to record and play things the user hears around them. Analogue is made from a variety of air pressure. Software Plugin's can add addition features to soundtracks.
