Unit 69 – Drawing concept art for computer games

Unit 69 Drawing concept art for computer games

Concept art is used as a way to develop ideas for designs by drawing several different iterations of the same things so you can compare and contrast them to see which one is better and fits the game, film, animation and comic book better. They do this by drawing a few quick sketches, then you shade and refine your drawings and then you chose the best one.

Concept art starts as a few quick sketch of ideas that they think would work, then they choose

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening uses a different art style to the rest of the series because of a different art designer designed all of the characters so the art style is completely difference.

Here we see Virgil in his first design (the one on the left) and his second design (the one on the right), the second design is the one that was used for the game. The first and second design have a lot of similarities like the exact same face, the same dark colour scheme, his brown gloves and his white hair. The differences between the two designs is that the main design has a blue coat, he holds his sword in his left hand instead of his right, he doesn't have a scarf in his main design and his shoes are black instead of brown.
The design of Virgil is supposed to show the fact that he is intimidating but level headed, the exact opposite of the games protagonist Dante, that is why the main design of Virgil that is used in the game has a red coat and is left handed so they changed Virgil's dominate hand and his main colour scheme.

In Devil May Cry 1, Virgil had several designs that were never used due to Virgil having a suit of armour that make him look completely different then the concept art depicts him. The concept art on the right is the first design, you can tell because of little it is shaded compared to the concept art on the left. The design of Virgil was used to be shadow version Dante while being an intimidating opponent because of how he is an enemy that you have to fight. The first design of Virgil had him look similar to Dante so that the troupe of a shadow version of the main character, the second design was meant to make Virgil look more sophisticated as opposed to Dante's causal nature but Virgil looks like he could turn brutal and intimidating as shown by how the design shows his change in mannerisms. The second design of Virgil, where he looks sophisticated was later used in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition as one of Virgil's alternate costumes that he can wear while you play as him.
In Devil May Cry 1, Dante's first design had a similar design sense that he had in his final design with how he has a mainly red colour scheme and the design is meant to convey a cocky character, however the first design depicts a more rugged and experienced fighter from his facial expression. His sword is completely different from his final design going from a futuristic chain saw sword combination in his first design to a normal looking sword. The design in both the initial and final design are used to portray an experienced fighters who are overconfident but in the initial design it shows more of an rugged fighter where as the final design depicts a more calm and cool fighter.
