Types of Digital Graphics

Types of Digital Graphics

Raster Images (BMP, GIF, TIFF, JPEG)

Raster images are images with a dot matrix data structure in a rectangular grid of pixels or points of colour. The colours in a Raster image are made up of the 3 primary colour (Blue, Red and Green). The Raster is the grid which the images are on. A Raster grid or X and Y coordinates are on display space. Some examples raster image formats are: BMP (Bitmap), GIF (Graphic Interchange Format), TIFF (Tag Image File Format) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

Vector Images (PSD, WMF, FLA, AI)

Vector images are not made with a grid of pixels they are comprised with lots of paths this allows them to look superior to Raster image. Some examples of Vector Image format are: PSD (PhotoShop Document), WMF (Windows MetaFile), FLA (F L A) and AI (Adobe Illustrator).

File Extensions (BMP, PNG, TIFF, JPG, PSD)

File extension is a file that has been named through a certain way. File extensions helps an operating system, like windows. A document that has been called 'Myhomework.docx' would make the windows know that its that type of document it should be opened with for example the 'docx' means that it should be opened with Microsoft Word. Some examples of formats that use file extension are: BMP (Bitmap), PNG (P N G), TIFF (Tag Image File Format), JPG (J P G) and PSD (PhotoShop Document).

Compression (E.g. Lossy or Lossless)

Lossless and Lossy compression are terms that describe if the file is compressed or not.

Image Capture (Scanner, Digital Camera, Tablet)

Image capture is when an image is a photo taken in real-life and are used in the game, mainly as backgrounds, so that the game looks more realistic. It is only used in games with a photo-realistic art style.

Optimizing (Target Image output, Image bit depth, Image resolution, Image dimensions, Compression)

Editing the image to make it better and work on more systems. The Target Image Output is how much the image has to be optimized before it reaches the optimal data storage amount

Storage of Image Assets (File Size, File naming convection, Assets managements)

The storage of image assets is a way to store texture, graphics and text styles easily. This has proven to be useful in gaming industry mainly because of how it covers lots of useful features that video games use.
