Video games are fun and enjoyable to play but if taken to far they prove to be a serious danger to your health and the people around. In the United States alone there have been suicides, murders, involuntary manslaughter and crime sprees.

Social isolation

Video games have always been said to cause social isolation while playing games casually doesn't cause this playing games too much can cause social isolation where people can not operate in a social environment, to help combat this there has been a website setup called Gaming anonymous to help get rid of the addiction.

Cost

While we all know that you have to by video games we never really know how much we're paying for them, for example a new games console and 5 new games costs up to £500 and there are the cost for electrical bills, subscription fees and the time you spend playing games.

Separation from reality

Playing games for too long can cause a disconnection from reality which makes it hard to tell the difference between games and reality, examples being commuting murder visually similar to a game in real life and racing a car off a course similar to a game.

Benefits (hand-eye coordination, brain training)

Playing games has been stated to have benefits examples being that gamers react faster in dangerous situation, having improved visual contrast sensitivity, being able to track moving objects better and being able to multitask.

Thinking and strategy skills

Research has been used to prove that playing video games can improve your ability to solve problems and your strategic thinking skills. The tests have shown that the strategic thinking is not a normal trait its a trait that can only be improved via methods like video games.

Future impacts

Gaming's impacts can be seen very easily, gaming can allow people to test things in virtual reality which would be dangerous or impossible in real life, gaming has developed a lot over the past 20 years which has helped people develop new skills and helped educate people in a fun and interesting manner, gaming has helped to create jobs for designer, programmers, writers, translators, animators, musicians, market managers, audio engineers and technical support specialists.

Impact on 'mainstream' applications development

Gaming has helped develop computer systems for along time since it's inspection 20 years ago, games have also changed a lot over 20 years going from nearly inoperable text based games, to more playable 3D designed games of all varieties.

Psychological factors

Sound

Sound effects and music in games can be used to convey emotions, such as: fear, joy, sadness, anger and intensity. Music can be used differently in games from music that plays in a given area, music that plays during cut scenes to emphasise the tone the game wants to convey, to adaptive music which changes given the situation during gameplay to intensify the situation.

High score ratings

High scores in video games are used to entice players into being the very best but once you are ranked one people become paranoid that someone will beat their score so people constantly try to beat their own score so this doesn't happen, but if their score does get beaten then they have to beat the new high score to become no. 1 again.

Competitive games

People around the world are competitive and gaming is another way to do this is by playing online games, gaming has the ability fight anyone anywhere over the world easily, there are also tournaments where people meet up and fight in a tournament format where the winner moves on until one person has beat the other finalist to win. Due to people be too competitive they can get aggressive to someone on their team for messing up or someone on the other team for beating them.

Peer pressure

People like to feel like they belong somewhere so they will often times play games that people they know play or people they admire play so to feel like they belong they by the game so that they have something in common with each other. Gamers can also be immune to peer pressure do to gamers being introverted they often times don't want to be in social situations so they don't try to fit in since they're fine on their own.
